Many Americans have funneled their grief over the September 11th attack into an unprecedented display of financial generosity, patriotism and volunteerism. In New York, charities have struggled emotionally and financially. Many have lost offices, clients, volunteers and donors. In response to the terrorist attack on the United States, we at the Frueauff Foundation have joined in the effort to meet these overwhelming needs. The following are organizations and institutions in New York to which we provided additional financial support in 2001.
Franklin Pierce College
In the wake of an emotionally difficult fall semester, the Foundation provided funding to establish the September 11, 2001 Endowed Scholarship. This fund will assist students who have been affected by the 9/11 disaster. The college will enhance this fund with institutional resources and continue to augment the fund with private gifts and grants.
Legal Aid Society
The events of September 11th raise special issues for the services Legal Aid Society provides to the low-income community. The central office was adjacent to the Trade Center complex on two sides. In just over one week, nearly 500 Legal Aid employees were reassigned to other locations with little interruption to the services provided to clients. Immediate thought was given to those low-income workers in and around the World Trade Center. There were those who could not quality for Legal Aid on Monday, September 10, and became eligible overnight. Many legal problems have also emerged for the "newly" poor. In addition to the 20,000 civil legal cases each year, it is estimated that an additional 4,000 clients and cases will be added as a result of the attack.
Floating Hospital
Thousands of New York families - most led by single, impoverished mothers - live in temporary or transitional housing. When these women and children leave their communities because of homelessness or domestic violence, they often lose contact with even the most rudimentary health care. Their medical problems are compounded and their lives unsettled as they are shuttled from shelter to shelter. Since 1866, Floating Hospital has assisted in providing primary health care to more shelters and transitional homes than any other medical provider. Last year, Health Link for Families in Transition was established to further assist the needs of the community. This program provides health education and social services for shelter-bound women and children from intake through re-housing. These services range from nutrition, family planning, parenting, employment, education, housing, and programs providing reimbursable medical services. These services are needed now more than ever.
St. Vincent Catholic Medical Centers(Manhattan)
More than 600 injured victims and emergency personnel were taken to St. Vincent's Emergency Room which was the Trauma Center closest to the site. St. Vincent's has one of the few Level 1 Trauma Centers in New York and was among the first to respond during the Trade Center attack. Additional money from the Foundation was dedicated to the rehabilitation of the emergency room.
City Harvest
Rescue and recovery workers, families devastated by the disaster, and those who have lost jobs in an uncertain economy are now added to the thousands of people City Harvest feeds each day. Immediately following September 11th, staff worked around the clock to locate and transport food. They delivered raw ingredients to restaurateurs who prepared meals City Harvest then delivered to Ground Zero respite centers. Four additional trucks were rented and worked in two 12-hour shifts during this period.
WNYC
WNYC is the only independent, non-commercial source of news, talk, and cultural programming in New York with more than 1 million listeners each week. Foundation funding will assist with costs associated with replacing one of the antennas destroyed by the attack.
Midnight Run
Midnight Run volunteers deliver clothing, hot food, blankets, and friendship several nights a week to the homeless in Manhattan. They also try to bridge the gap between the homed and the homeless, to break down barriers between human beings.
Interfaith Neighbors
Interfaith responded quickly to the attack by establishing the Peace of Mind Project. This project provides support groups, training workshops, educational tools, information and resources, referrals and counseling, and crisis intervention services. These much needed services are available to children, teens, parents, teachers, social workers, guidance counselors, and community organizations throughout the City.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York
Under normal circumstances, the low-income, single-parent families BBBS serve have difficulty maintaining stability so vital in a child's life. Now more than ever, they are reaching out for that vital sense of continuity, community and comfort. The number of children interested in participating in BBBS is greater than ever before. In addition to the waiting list of families BBBS already serves, there is now a number of new single-parent families as a result of the September 11th attack. BBBS has created a special mentoring program for youth of immigrant parents. These parents felt that a new bias and prejudice has resulted from the attack, affecting their youth's well-being.
